There are certain songs that just resonate with you. Whether that song recreates a moment in time or is just one that you really like, these songs are the songs that helped create the person you are and were a constant companion in the journey called life.

Today we continue exploring those songs in my life and what they mean to me.   This is Those Certain Songs. Today’s song, Good Times.

The Song:

Title: Good Times

Artist: Marcy Playground

Album: Leaving Wonderland…In A Fit of Rage

The Lyrics:

When life has got you down
And everything about it makes you blue
Pick up keep moving on
Cause that’s the very best thing you can do

Say hey Woz whatever this is it’s alright
Hey John, this too shall pass
It’s a season in your life, yeah, yeah

Well I’m kicking down the back streets
And people wanna break my stride
Everyone has a time
When they lose their pride

But when I’m old and in my chair
Thinking back, looking back
What will I remember
All the good times, they were alright

When every morning brings
A struggle just to get up from the bed
Say hey man whatever this is it’s alright
Hey man, this too shall pass
It’s a lesson in your life, yeah, yeah

Well, I’m kicking down the back streets
And people wanna break my stride
Everyone has a time
When they lose their pride

But when I’m old and in my chair
Thinking back, looking back
What will I remember
All the good times, they were alright

What it means to me:

Sometimes it’s hard to just sit back and remember the good times, especially with everything going on at the moment.  That is what this song, quite literally, reminds me to do.

I started listening to Marcy Playground around the same time everyone else did.  With the advent of the song Sex and Candy, I knew I had found something special.  Afterwards, when everyone else moved on, I stuck with them and discovered that John Wozniak and his band were more than just a one hit wonder, in fact, they were extremely talented folks who seemed to keep going despite the fact that they had already had most of their 15 minutes.

After their third major album, MP3, came and went, I often wondered if we would hear from this underappreciated band.  To my surprise, Wozniak had something up his sleeve and it was a return to greatness.

The album is filled with some great songs, I reviewed it here a few years ago, but we are hear to talk about a certain song, and that song is the track Good Times. Good Times is one of those tunes that I listen too when feeling defeated or share with people who are going through a tough time.  It is a reminder that, no matter how bad things get, you still have the good times in your life to help buoy you to wherever you need to be.

It is a simple song with a message of hope, redemption and a reminder that not all skies stay grey especially if it is raining.  As someone who suffers from depression and anxiety, I find this tune a great way to reset those dark parts in my mind, giving me something to focus on besides the negative thoughts and emotions running through my brain.  Woz’s voice just carries me through and deposits me back on the border, allowing me to step back across to somewhere brighter. It might just do that for you as well.
