There are certain songs that just resonate with you. Whether that song recreates a moment in time or is just one that you really like, these songs are the songs that helped create the person you are and were a constant companion in the journey called life.

Today we continue exploring those songs in my life and what they mean to me.   This is Those Certain Songs.

The Song:

Title: Tin Pan Alley

Artist: Apples In Stereo

Album: Tone Soul Evolution

The Lyrics:

I made up a new little song
if I had a nickel for every one

Then I’d be making a living
instead of sitting here whistling now
I’d be making a living
just like a tin pan alley musician

I’d come up with ten tunes a day
keep them ever-coming for but a modest wage

Then I’d be making a living
instead of sitting here whistling now
I’d be making a living
just like a tin pan alley musician

If they’d listen to me whistlin
they would whistle along

Then I’d be making a living
just like those old tin pan alley musicians.

If they’d listen to me whistlin
I won’t be sittin’ here long

What it means to me:

Back in 1997 I discovered a band that was certainly something special.  While many band’s inspiration can be traced back to The Beatles, The Apples In Stereo can be traced back to the classic surf rock band, The Beach Boys.  Flush with their upbeat tempos and unassuming lyrics, The Apples brought me back to my childhood listening to my dad’s Beach Boy’s albums.

Today’s song is a simple one that on it’s surface is a joyous song but is actually one about wishing for a better tomorrow.  If you listen to the words behind the poppy tune, you would hear the story of a street musician who is joyously lamenting his situation playing alone on the street corner.  To me, it has always been a song about dreams and how if you don’t act on even the smallest of dreams you can miss out on a wonderful future that could even make you famous. I mean, it’s not like anyone made anything out of themselves by just wishing right?

Regardless of your interpretation of the tune, Robert Schneider’s voice coupled with the classic sound of the 60’s is a joy to listen to.  This is probably my very favorite song from this band, and certainly my favorite off of this album. Hopefully you like it too.
