The first movie in this series is one of my all time favorite films. I have watched it too many times to count and still love it today. This film is one of my top movies as well despite the fact that it’s almost an entirely different genre than the first. It’s a strange fun film, I give you House II: The Second Story. (Pun intended)
Todays Key Movie:
House II follows Jesse (Arye Gross ) and his girlfriend Kate (Lar Park Lincoln ) as they move into His ancestral home which also happens to be the place his parents were murdered when he was a child. Soon he and his goofy friend Charlie ( Jonathan Stark ) discover that Jesse’s great great grandfather still lives on the property and then madness ensues. A story involving crystal skulls, time travel, and undead gunslingers, this film is much more zany than scary.
Why this movie?
This is one of the fun ‘horror’ films of the 80’s. While the rest of the films are more horror than comedy, this one is just plain fun. I vividly remember watching this one over and over and wishing I had a pet Dog-worm-thing like they found in the movie. To this day I enjoy the heck out of this film even though it’s plot makes no sense at all. I guess when you love something as a kid it really doesn’t matter how crazy and nonsensical it really is when you watch it as an adult. I still laughed at all the same spots and, in some ways, I was magically transported through time during that 88 minutes of crazy filmmaking. I guess time travel isn’t that far fetched after all.
The coolest things about this film were the crystal skulls themselves. Around the time this film came out, the whole mystery of the crystal skull thing had come back around and had been featured on all kinds of ‘real mystery’ shows. So of course, being the nerd that I am, I hit the library to find out everything I could about these skulls. I didn’t find much, but I had fun doing it!
Okay, you like this film, but is it really a ‘good film’?
Yes and no. Is it well made and well produced? Absolutely. Do the actors do a good job? Yes, yes they do. Does it make any sense at all? No. Not one bit. The plot is really a jumbled mess of story and when analysed, it really doesn’t hold up. Nothing makes sense at all in this film but that is okay. It’s fun and that is all that matters. Sometimes you just need to turn your brain off and enjoy something silly.
Still, it is better than another movie about Crystal Skulls…
OK, where do I get this movie?
This film is available as part of a set with the first film, you can grab one from Amoeba Music for around $15.
You can also get it streaming from services like Vudu and others. I haven’t seen it on netflix yet but that doesn’t mean it wont be on there eventually.
To me, it’s totally worth it.
And here is the trailer:
