There are certain songs that just resonate with you. Whether that song recreates a moment in time or is just one that you really like, these songs are the songs that helped create the person you are and were a constant companion in the journey called life.
Today we continue exploring those songs in my life and what they mean to me. This is Those Certain Songs.
Now, I have featured Pete Yorn on by blog before with the review of his 2001 album songsforthemorningafter. It remains one of my favorite albums to this day but Pete has continued to make music and it is one of his new tracks that makes the list today. The song, The World and it is so very timely.
The Song:
Title: The World
Artist: Pete Yorn
Album: Jeannine/The World Single
The Lyrics:
Even though I don’t like it sometimes
Seeing what ya get
Ya don’t know what you’re expecting
You’re waiting on the things
That I know you’ve been rejecting
The world is a beautiful place
Even though I don’t like it sometimes
Even though it makes me sad sometimes
Seeing what you’ll get
You don’t know what to expect
But you’re in the game
So you know you can’t complain
The world is a funny place
Even though it makes me sad sometimes
It makes me sad sometimes
Oh it makes me sad sometimes
It makes me sad sometimes
They drive home in the sun
But take another piece of me
And I just can’t take it sometimes
You’re ever in a rush
You don’t know what to expect
And even in the mud
You can’t get that upset
The world is a funny place
Even if it makes me sad sometimes
Oh it makes me sad sometimes
Oh it makes me sad sometimes
Oh it makes me sad sometimes
What it means to me:
It has been a rough year for many of us. Between social and political unrest the world round, a pandemic the likes we have never seen in modern times and well, every thing else piled on top, the world is a crazy place for sure.
Being a fan of Pete Yorn I periodically check his listings on Spotify for something new. I was delighted last year with the tremendous Caretakers album and just a few days ago, I was pleased to find two new tracks from Pete. While Jeannine is a fantastic song reminiscent of his classic work, it was The World that really captured me. In fact, it’s one of those songs I put on repeat and let play over and over for the better part of an hour (or more). Every note, every word, every inflection hit precisely how I was and am and probably will be feeling this day and the next.
The song itself is hopeful but truthful and that in itself is what makes it so amazing. It serves as a reminder that yeah, you may not like the world, the world may make you sad, you might not even be able be able to take it sometimes, but it is still a beautiful, funny and crazy place that is worth living in, even if it doesn’t feel like it sometimes. I love how Pete Yorn is able to make a song both hopeful and sorrowful at the same time hitting on the exact feelings that many of us have had even if we didn’t realize it at the time.
If you are reading this, Pete, Thank You for putting to song a tune that perfectly captures my emotional state on so many levels. You never cease to amaze me and I truly appreciate your work.
Till next time, remember
‘You’re ever in a rush
You don’t know what to expect
And even in the mud
You can’t get that upset’
Oh and if you want to see a live socially distant show from earlier this year that includes this song (since it’s gonna be hard to see anyone live for a while) check him out here. It’s pretty rad.
