Those Certain Songs: ‘All Will Be Well’ – The Gabe Dixon Band (2008)

There are certain songs that just resonate with you. Whether that song recreates a moment in time or is just one that you really like, these songs are the songs that helped create the person you are and were a constant companion in the journey called life.

Today we continue exploring those songs in my life and what they mean to me but also remembering that the next few days are going to be a pretty tense time here in the US. So what a better reminder than this track from Gabe Dixon, All Will Be Well.

What it means to me:

I suffer from Depression and Anxiety. While I have never sought professional help, although there are times I probably should have, I have come to recognize my good days from my bad, navigating them like a soldier navigates a mine field. There are many ways I have found to cope with these issues, one of them being writing, the other, music.

It is through the latter that I came to find today’s song. Listening to one of my favorite musicians, Dan Wilson, I stumbled on a tune I had never heard before on one of his live albums. Determined to track down this tune, I soon found the album ‘The Gabe Dixon Band‘ that contained the original version. Immediately, I found this song (and this album) to be a godsend. The song in particular really spoke to me in a way that I didn’t know that I needed at the moment. Before long it even became the basis for a Spotify Playlist entitled ‘Feel Better’ which is composed of the songs that help me get through any particularly hard day. This tune has since become somewhat of a mantra for me on those particularly hard days and boy does it put things into perspective.

While I know that I will never be free of my personal demons, that my battle with them will be something I deal with until the bitter end, it is songs like this that help me face the day. There is a certain comfort in hearing someone acknowledge that there are personal pains we all go through and that, even though it feels like it sometimes, none of us are really suffering alone. Fear, anxiety, depression, it is all part of being human and is just something all of us, at one point or another, will face. It is just how we face it that matters. Do we give in to those fears and demons or do we accept that, at some point, we will find ourselves in a better place even if it does not feel like it at the time. This is a daily struggle that I have found a way to deal with. It’s not a perfect way but it works for me.

The song itself is a gorgeous piece of work. Gabe’s voice accompanied by a piano reminds you that, no matter how hard things get, or no matter how dark things are, there is always a light to be found. While most inspirational songs tend to focus on how things are great no matter what, the thing I like about All Will Be Well is that Gabe reminds us that healing and comfort does not take place immediately, it is something that comes with time and sometimes that time seems to take forever. The thing is, if you wait it through, if you persevere, all will indeed, be well.

For those of you who need more help than just a song, I highly recommend seeking out someone to talk with. Whether it is a family member, a friend or a professional, sometimes the reminder that ‘All will be well’ is not enough and you just need a sympathetic ear to bend.
