Mystery. Intrigue. Trust.  They are all part of the episode that first aired on  February 11,1991.  This is Clues.

The Episode:

Stardate 44502.7 Clues

After travelling through a wormhole, the crew of the Enterprise awake to discover that they are missing time and Data is acting suspicious about how long they were knocked out.

The Breakdown:

clue 2
Data: The Designated Driver

The Enterprise encounters a new M-Class planet and, upon investigating it, they pass through an unstable wormhole.  Upon entering, the crew is knocked unconscious leaving only Data awake.  Data claims that they were only out for around 30 seconds but they soon discover that things are not what they seem.  Beverly notices that an experiment shows a days growth, Worf shows an injury that was repaired and other strange happenings throughout the ship.

clue 4
You are part of the Rebel Alliance…

Before long the crew begin to suspect that Data is either lying about the situation or malfunctioning.  This greatly disturbs the crew as this should not occur.   After much investigation, they decide to return to the wormhole and encounter a being that takes over Deanna Troi claiming that ‘the plan has failed’.   As it turns out the M Class Planet was populated by a highly xenophobic race, the Paxans) who threatened to destroy the Enterprise should they return to investigate.

All along  Data has been attempting to save the crew from certain death under the command of Picard himself. The was rendered unconscious and their memories erased in order to protect them from the Paxan people.  Picard and crew attempt to do it again after negotiating with the Paxans to allow them to live.  This time they make adjustments to account for the earlier mysteries and they are once again rendered unconscious.

Upon awakening, they go about their business none the wiser.

Is this a ‘Good’ Episode:

clue 5

While this is a throwaway episode that literally has no bearing on the crew as a whole, it is still a pretty solid entry.  The episode itself is served up as a mystery making the audience begin to question Data’s allegiance along with the crew. Even though we all know that Data can not lie, it is still a conundrum that has both us and the crew stymied.  Could Data be exhibiting signs of becoming Lore?  Could he be being used by someone to harm the crew?

It’s a classic mystery with a cool sci fi twist.

Gleanings and Cool Bits:

clue 1

We never see or hear from the Paxans again and this time it makes sense.  These folks REALLY don’t want to be discovered.

It looks like Picard still runs his Dixon Hill program, this time with Guinan!

We learn that Crusher is an amatur Ethnobotanist.

We see Worf’s Mok’bara class in this episode, a class we will see again in future episodes.
