With a terrific first season, we are back with season two of Seth MacFarlane’s scifi comedy, The Orville.   It looked like last season was heading to a little more serious scifi by the end, and was certainly better than that other scifi series, so we have to wonder if this trend will continue or will it revert to the Family Guy style of humor that MacFarlane is known for.  Yes, I know I am about six weeks late on this review, trust me, I have some catching up to do!

The Episode:

The Orville must divert to Moclus in order to allow Bortus to participate in his once-a-year urination celebration known as Ja’Loja.

Is it a ‘Good’ Episode?

While it is not a terrible, this one feels like a leftover episode from the previous season.  Almost like they held on to it just to have one in the bag and, seeing that the series was renewed, figuring it was a good way to start the new season.

Now, the main pee story behind, there is some great character development with the rest of the crew.  Issac and Clare continue their interesting relationship when one of Claire’s children get into trouble at school, Malloy gets dating tips from LaMarr while Chief of Security Kitan tries dating and things really don’t turn out as she plans.

Overall, fun episode but not season premiere material, I mean, the entire episode was a pee joke. Funny, yes but let’s try a little harder shall we? That being said, it is good to have the show back and holding it’s own.   I look forward to more.

Gleanings, Questions and cool bits: (slight spoilers here)

  • A new character is introduced this episode, one Janel Tyler.  Signing on to be the ship’s Dark Matter Cartographer, there seems to be a spark between her and Captain Mercer… I am sure we will see that play out.
  • Hopefully this series version of Pon’far will not be revisited again.
  • I love the relationship forming between Issac and Claire that started last season with a cool survival episode.  I really hope we get to see more of this story develop.

Thanks for reading the SciFi TV Review  I look forward to discussing the rest of the series with you!
