There are certain songs that just resonate with you. Whether that song recreates a moment in time or is just one that you really like, these songs are the songs that helped create the person you are and were a constant companion in the journey called life.

Today we continue exploring those songs in my life and what they mean to me.   This is Those Certain Songs.

Today’s Certain Song is Little Motel by Modest Mouse.

The Song:

Title: Little Motel

Artist: Modest Mouse

Album: We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank

The Lyrics:

I hope that you like it in your little motel
And I hope that the suite sleeps and suits you well
Well, I can see it as time and a sight through smell,
and that’s why it’s nice to be by yourself

cause that’s what I’m waiting for
That’s what I’m waiting for
That’s what I’m waiting for, aren’t I?
That’s what I’m waiting for
That’s what I’m waiting for
That’s what I’m waiting for, darling

We treat mishaps like sinking ships, and
I know that I don’t want to be out to drift
Well, I can see it in your eyes, like I taste your lips
and, they both tell me that we’re better than this

cause that’s what I’m waiting for
That’s what I’m waiting for
That’s what I’m waiting for, aren’t I?
That’s what I’m waiting for
That’s what I’m waiting for
That’s what I’m waiting for, darling

We trade tit for tat, like that for this
And I don’t think that there was an insult that was missed
I can see it in your eyes, like I taste your lips
and, I’m very sorry

cause that’s what I’m waiting for
That’s what I’m waiting for
That’s what I’m waiting for, aren’t I?
That’s what I’m waiting for
That’s what I’m waiting for
That’s what I’m waiting for, darling

Remainders of a shooting star
Landed directly on our broke-down little car
Before that we had made a wish
That we would be missed
If one or the other just did not exist

cause that’s what we’re waiting for
That’s what we’re waiting for
That’s what we’re waiting for, aren’t we?
That’s what we’re waiting for
That’s what we’re waiting for
That’s what we’re waiting for, aren’t we?

That’s what we’re waiting for
That’s what we’re waiting for
That’s what we’re waiting for, darling

That’s what we’re waiting for
That’s what we’re waiting for
That’s what we’re waiting for, aren’t we?

What it means to me:

This is one of the saddest songs I have ever heard yet it remains one of my favorites to this day. I remember picking up the album it came from and falling in love with Modest Mouse all over again, but it was this song in particular that made me realize just how incredible Issac Brock and his odd ball band were.

The song itself is about death and how, as we live our lives, going about our daily tasks and our petty things, it is the only real constant (besides taxes).  It is songs like this one that bring about a strange beauty in death, giving that fateful day a certain mystical sense.  It is there, waiting to congratulate you on a great performance after the curtain is drawn, but it is also a constant reminder that, if you are not careful, you can inadvertently court death and accidentally leave life behind.  In the song, Singer/Songwriter Issac Brock seems to come to the conclusion that we are all simply waiting the end but I am forced to believe that many of us are simply waiting for life while it is happening all around us.

Death is the thing that all of us, every human, every plant and every animal have in common, we are all mortal and, no matter how much we fool ourselves into believing otherwise, there is no chance for immortality. Even structures and the mountains themselves will eventually erode to nothing so, instead of fearing that time to come, we should use it as a reminder than there is every reason to enjoy the time we have.  We tend to treat the most minor if issues as if they are literally the end of the world not realizing that these little mishaps really don’t matter at the end of the day.  In a way, we keep looking for things that will be the end as if we want the worst to happen, even though we really don’t.

So, the lesson here, don’t keep waiting for the end, just embrace the now and do what you can to make it better, what ever your ‘it’ is.  We only get one chance in this world, why not do what you can with yours while you still have the time?

I know, pretty dark stuff but then again, That’s what we’re waiting for, aren’t we?
