There are certain songs that just resonate with you. Whether that song recreates a moment in time or is just one that you really like, these songs are the songs that helped create the person you are and were a constant companion in the journey called life.

Today we continue exploring those songs in my life and what they mean to me.   This is Those Certain Songs.

Today’s Certain Song is Yardsale

The Song:

Title: Yardsale

Artist: The Avett Brothers

Album: The Gleam

The Lyrics:

I wonder if this blade ran through someone’s side
The blood wiped away to hide
How evil you grandfather was fore he died
But war can make monsters out of us all
I’m sure I’d become one if I was called
And then it would be my blade
Here at this yardsale

The guitar I am holding is way out of tune
The neck it is warped and the saddle is through
I wonder if sweet music ever was played
From the hands of a boy to a girl in the shade
From this rickety ghost of a song
Here at this yardsale

A dollar for anything here on this quilt
A price tag for hands from which all things are built
A blanket of voices speak pleasure in shame
Flowers of plastic and fruit of the same
A basket of nothing at all
Here at this yardsale

So if I had the money I’d buy everything
And cover the whole lot with good gasoline
And burn it for all that I care for the past
And rid mother earth of what never should last
And give her the present of ash
Made of a yardsale

What it means to me:

I was introduced to the Avett Brothers from a coworker at a now defunct Music retailer.  This guy loved music, still does in fact, and was always one to recommend some of the best bands I now love.  The Avett Brothers were a band that I would likely have written off as another modern country band if it not for his introduction and I have since purchased all of their albums and even seen them live in concert.  Today’s song is from an EP named The Gleam.  The Gleam is a simple acoustic collection of songs that, honestly really give you a glimpse into the talent that is The Avett Brothers.  This song is a simple one, but one that really made me think about life at a rather unique angle.

Everything has a story.  From the penny you find laying on the ground to the pen you find in your pocket.  It’s probably never crossed your mind but yardsales and the like are, in a way, the selling of someones memories and stories.  Everything there is packed with tales, some large, some small, some astonishing, some nothing much but a mention.  Nevertheless, every item there has had some connection to some person at some point in time.

When I first heard this song I began to think about the things I have, the things I’ve lost and the things I have let go.  I wondered if the people who now have them ever consider their story and what that single item meant to me in the past.  Probably not, but still, it is something to think about isnt it?
