There are certain songs that just resonate with you. Whether that song recreates a moment in time or is just one that you really like, these songs are the songs that helped create the person you are and were a constant companion in the journey called life.
Today we continue exploring those songs in my life and what they mean to me. This is Those Certain Songs. Today’s entry is Over and Away She Goes by Bill Fox.
The Song:
Title: Over and Away She Goes
Artist: Bill Fox
Album: Shelter from the Smoke
The Lyrics:
Please note, these were self transcribed so if you know them to be wrong, please let me know.
Over and away she goes
over and away she often goes
she leaves me here without a drink
to find another sense of wonder
wonder why she goes
over and away She Moves
spilling grooves and taking chances there
it’s not her hair I’m tangled in
it’s just another sense of wonder
I wonder why she goes
She moves and drives
she drives and moves around
no wonder
no wonder for the sound
I’m hoping that she’ll return
in every place my body burns
Over wild, over snow
it’s just another sense of wonder
wonder why she goes
Back and forth with wheels roll out
and my heart is filled with doubt
change my clothes
blow my nose
it’s just another sense of wonder
wonder why she goes
What it means to me:
This is a song I discovered in the December 1997 edition if CMJ New Music Monthly. You will see CMJ mentioned frequently in this series as it was a major source for me for my music, coming in at around $5 a copy with a disc full of new music. The magazine has long since gone by the wayside like many others but it’s legacy lives on.
The song I discovered that day was from a man named Bill Fox. As I mentioned in my 2019 review if his album Shelter from the storm, Bill Fox had a mesmerizing style of stripped down low-fi folk music that really just takes your breath away, but it is this song that really spoke to me.
The song itself is somewhat of a ballad to a woman that the singer is fascinated with. He watches her from afar hoping that she will return and he will have a chance to tell her how he feels for her. It is a tale of lost or unrequited love and longing to be loved.
When I discovered this song, I felt very much like the singer of this song, constantly looking for love and wanted to be loved by someone, anyone. It would be years and several failed relationships before I would find that someone, but this song reminds me of where I have been and the struggle it took to get there.
Additionally, this was a song from time before I left home for good and one that takes me back to a simpler time just before striking out on my own to find a life. There is something in the music and the Fox’s voice that hit’s that certain part of my brain that brings me back to the moment I first heard this song so many lifetimes ago.
Technically speaking, it is a simple track with a verse chorus verse theme with only a little bit of production and a whole lot of heart.
The rest of the album is quite good, but this song…this song is something special.

Great song, and I can relate to why this song means so much to you. I’m still looking unfortunately, but it’s nice to hear songs like this as they instil a sense of hope. I had never heard this one before, but I liked it a lot! Thank you for sharing!😊
