The Twilight Zone has been a mainstay for me for most of my life. Along with Star Trek, The original Twilight Zone series was a one that I would watch regularly with my dad. Every night in syndication we would watch another of Rod Serling’s classic tales and I would find myself swept into another dimension, a dimension not only of sight and sound, but of mind.
Fast forward 60 years later and once again the journey into imagination has returned. This time however, writer Director Jordan Peele is at the helm and, after two successful films, he takes on the classic that started sixty years ago.
So, let’s explore the latest episode of The Twilight Zone.
Today’s Episode: Not All Men
The Episode:
After meteors crash on earth, all of the men in a small town begin to act…strange. Are the meteors causing this strange and violent outbreak or is it just another excuse for a case of Toxic Masculinity? We find out as we dive deeper into, the Twilight Zone.
Is it a ‘Good’ Episode?
The question presented in this one is simple, are people responsible for their actions and, if not, can outside influences be blamed on poor responses to everyday things. While much of this episode relies on the perspective of the lead character and how she perceives the men around her.
Early on Anne, Taissa Farmiga finds herself in a very common but no less scary situation where a potential date attempts to take advantage of them being alone together after a brief meteor shower. Although he plays it off as nothing, it is clear he has some issues from the get go. Anne soon begins to notice the rather abrupt actions of the men around her and wonders if these actions have anything to do with the meteors. She also begins to believe that these same meteors have contamination of the water table causing this outbreak of violence to spread.
Once again, this is an episode with incredible production value and a wonderful cast. The story is solid and really manages to capture that creepy undertone Twilight Zone is famous for while addressing real social issues in today’s world. This one manages to take Toxic Masculinity to a whole new level with yet another excuse for it’s existence, this time it’s meteors, or is it just the Twilight Zone?
Bottom Line:
This season has had it’s ups and downs. From great episodes about racism to odd stories about space explorers that literally goes nowhere. This one, I have to say, this is the kind of episode I expect from this series and certainly one of the best episodes of the season so far. It is intense, it is dark and man does it do it’s job getting the point across. Honestly, I think Rod Serling would have been proud. I really hope we get more of this caliber before the season comes to a close.
