There are certain songs that just resonate with you. Whether that song recreates a moment in time or is just one that you really like, these songs are the songs that helped create the person you are and were a constant companion in the journey called life.
Today we continue exploring those songs in my life and what they mean to me. This is Those Certain Songs.
Today’s Certain Song is
The Song:
Title: Unmarked Helicopters
Artist: Soul Coughing
Album: Songs in the Key of X
The Lyrics:
At random serpentine
Through phatic coils emerging
Some other thought it’s thinking
This light sounds above the houses on the ground
This illumination visited upon the whole land
The lord is coming soon
Here comes the noise it makes
The demon was an idea
The demon is awake
The scratch mark left across the surface of your mind
This hour now upon us
The hour has now arrived
The lord is coming soon
Unmarked helicopters
They said it was a weather balloon
I know the whole shebang
I know the names of men they had to hang
I let her out of the trunk
I heard what she said at them
They’ve come to drag her through the double M
It goes black, black, black, black and blacker
It goes black, black, black, black and blacker
It goes black, black, black, black and blacker
The lord is coming soon
Unmarked helicopters
What it means to me:
I LOVE the X-Files and when an album came out based on the tv series containing music both from and inspired by the show, I HAD to get it. When the disc finally arrived, probably via Columbia House, I found an album filled with some incredible tunes. I will go deeper on this at a later date about the album but among the songs on the album, this was one of the tunes that I found enthralling. To be honest, It was probably thanks to this tune that I found a deep love for Soul Coughing and subsequently Doughty’s solo work as well.
Taking the subject of aliens and conspiracy theories to heart, Soul Coughing, led by Mike Doughty, dove in and contributed a tune about just that. Comprised of some of the coolest visuals including the titular the Unmarked Black Helicopters, this song really brings the feeling and chaotic nature of conspiracies and uncertainty to life. Through it’s constant beat coupled with strange sounds and Doughty’s sarcasm filled vocals, I can’t think of a song that captures the theme of the X-files as well my belief in the unknown. It is damned near perfect and remains one of my favorites to this day.
