There are certain songs that just resonate with you. Whether that song recreates a moment in time or is just one that you really like, these songs are the songs that helped create the person you are and were a constant companion in the journey called life.
Today we continue exploring those songs in my life and what they mean to me. This is Those Certain Songs.
Today’s Certain Song is Sorrow by Bad Religion
The Song:

What it means to me:
Ever since I first heard this song in twenty years ago I have never felt it was not relevant. It’s kind of sad to say that really as that means that nothing has really changed in the past 20 years when it comes to getting closer to a peaceful world.
Originally written in a reference to the Bush administration, which is referenced in the ‘prideful father line’ Bad Religion makes it clear that they are not happy with the status quo of the time. Sadly, it seems nothing has changed since then, in fact things have only seemed to get worse. I won’t get into a deep political discussion here but the fact of the matter is that this song really spells out what has to happen for humanity to finally be able to step away from sorrow. It’s simple and painful at the same time.
We need to just accept peace. We need to lay down our weapons, We need to have all world leaders relinquish their power and allow people to rise and be one. Sadly, it is the ‘fathers and sons’ and the continuing game of oneupmanship, and seeking the acceptance of those above us that continues to lead us to a state of disrepair. Everyone seems to want to prove something to someone and, in doing so only manage to complicate matters. It’s funny, because in this search for finding acceptance, the answer lies within, and the only way to fix things is to accept ourselves for who we are and then move forward.
While this song can be interpreted as a description of a hopeless cycle of power with things that will never be laid out as possible solutions, I see it as one of hope, as a reminder that we can and should be better….but only if we really want it.
I don’t know what the future holds. If I did, things would certainly be different for me. It seems 2020 is a year that just keeps on finding new and interesting ways to throw wrenches in the process. Let’s hope that we will use this time to look back and realize that we can and should do better, maybe the phrase ‘hindsight is 2020’ is more prophecy than suggestion.
